INDIAN MILLS VOLUNTEER FIRE CO.

PROUDLY SERVING SHAMONG TWP SINCE 1942

History of The Indian Mills Volunteer Fire Company #1

On February 12, 1942, a group of 32 residents gathered at the school auditorium to discuss the need for fire protection within the town. Advice was given by members of the Burlington County Firemens Association, the Chief and several members of the Union Fire Company of Medford, and members of the Waterford Township Fire Company about the running of a fire company.

A motion was made and seconded to form a fire company and they named it The Indian Mills Volunteer Fire Company #1.  Officers were elected, committees were appointed, and the members voted to have the Company Incorporated.  Soon after, first Fire Chief Henry Wright appointed a 1st and 2nd Assistant Chief, by-laws were drafted and adopted, and a financial program was designed to establish a fire station.

Our first fire truck was acquired in March of 1942, at a cost of $1200.00. By comparison, the unit ordered in 2023 had a price tag of nearly $1 million.

On March19, 1942 the township passed a resolution recognizing the entity as the official fire company. $2,000 was provided to begin funding the effort of protecting lives and property, and a motion was passed to build a fire station of 24 x 24 feet.

Over the next 80 + years, the volunteers have given their time, skills, treasure, and sweat to fight fires, respond to emergencies of all kinds, expand the department, build larger facilities, and meet many challenges. Today our apparatus fleet is 7 trucks, 2 marine units, with an engine pumper currently on order due for delivery in 2026. We have over 30 members. Many of the names have changed (some are still with us since the early days), prices and expenses have gone up, and the population of our township has grown but the mission remains the same.  To learn more about us, or if you are considering joining our team to help continue the legacy and service to our township, please contact us.
